His main areas of research area socio-ecological transformations in the fields of energy and mobility, sustainable consumption, sociology of risk, environmental sociology, science and technology studies and transdisciplinarity.

Marco Sonnberger studied sociology and political science at the Universities of Heidelberg and Stuttgart. From 2009 to 2021, he was a research associate at the Centre for Interdisciplinary Risk and Innovation Research at the University of Stuttgart (ZIRIUS). In 2011, he spent two months as a research fellow at the Center for Climate and Energy Decision Making at Carnegie Mellon University (USA). After completing his PhD in 2014, he was first a postdoc and then a junior research group leader and spokesperson for the research area Sustainability and Transformation at ZIRIUS. From 2021 to the end of 2024, he was a research associate at the Department of Environmental Sociology at Friedrich Schiller University Jena as part of the Collaborative Research Centre 294 Structural Change of Property. In October 2024, he successfully completed his Habilitation at the University of Stuttgart, thereby acquiring the academic qualification that authorises him to teach sociology. Since January 2025, he is a lecturer and research associate at the Department of Sociology of Technology, Risk and Environment at the University of Stuttgart. He is also an associated researcher at ZIRIUS and the Collaborative Research Centre 294 Structural Change of Property.
